Project Almanac, Predestination and the return of the Terminator?are only a few of the time-travel films being released in 2015. Today, we take a look at some essential-viewing for time-travel enthusiasts. In no particular order, here are some great time-travel movies for your consideration.

Primer
This film has gained popularity over the past couple of years. It’s best known for being the most complex time-travel film ever released, and you really have to pay attention from the first second.?It looks at a different type of time machine, and asks some unique questions about time travel.

Donnie Darko
This creepy little movie wasn’t seen by many people on its original release, however, thanks to its obscure nature it became highly recommended by film enthusiasts, making it a modern classic. Getting a chance to see a younger Jake?Gyllenhaal and seeing time-travel through the eyes of outcast kid is always a plus.

Looper
Bruce Willis versus Joesph Gordon-Levitt, and they’re both playing the same person, AND there’s time-travel! Yes please! Again, another look into what time-travel could turn into and a unique look at how it could be abused. Looper asks the question “what if time-travel ended up in the hands of criminals?”

12 Monkeys
Bruce Willis once again. This time he is sent back in time to stop a deadly virus from spreading and killing most of humanity. The only clue he has, is 12 monkeys. Like many films on this list, the less you know the better.

Edge of Tomorrow
What if aliens used time-travel as a weapon? Queue Groundhog Day meets Independence Day. This film will thoroughly entertain everyone, even the non-initiated into the world of time-travel. The concept is simple. Tom Cruise has to repeat the same day over and over again. Live, die, repeat.

Safety Not Guaranteed
This film is arguably not about time-travel per se, but about a supposed time-traveler who puts an advert in the local newspaper,?seeking?a time-travelling companion to join him on his next adventure.

The Butterfly Effect
Taking the chaos theory ideology to the extreme, The Butterfly Effect explores what would happen?if you could change one thing from the past. Interesting film with a great story concept.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Not only is it?the best Terminator film, Terminator 2: Judgement Day is also one of the best time-travel films. With the first Terminator showing that time is predetermined, the sequel?challenges that by leaving it open-ended as to whether or not everything is set in stone.

Back To The Future 2
It’s so weird writing this article in 2015, and looking out my window and not seeing hover cars. However, those Nike shoes will become a reality this year! Probably the best mainstream time-travel movie, and a great starting point if you want to go down the time-travel rabbit hole.

Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel
A slightly different look into time-travel but fun nonetheless. The cast from this film explores the difficult questions surrounding time-travel.

Are there any time-travel films you feel are essential viewing?
While I love both movies, Safety Not Guaranteed and Donnie Darko are both movies whose central plot doesn’t hinge on time travel in any significant way. I would instead substitute Triangle, The Jacket, and Time Crimes. The Jacket’s applicability is debatable, but the other two suffice to round out your list.
Yeah, they both may not hinge on the storyline but they both present time-travel in a unique sense. I agree with Triangle and Time Crimes, this may be a list I may have to revisit in the future. Thanks for your feedback.
