You’ve now seen it. After such a long wait, you’ve experienced the newest instalment of the beloved franchise Terminator. But certain aspects didn’t quite make sense, certain points didn’t add up. If you’re like me, you left?Terminator Genisys?feeling confused. Here’s a list of truths, sometimes sad, that you realise after watching Terminator Genisys. Obvious spoiler warning.
1- Is John no longer married?
They seem to pick and choose what’s still relevant and what isn’t with this sequel. How far after the events of Terminator Salvation?are the future scenes in Genisys set? Or does it not matter?
2- The T-800 actually does kill John Connor
I guess Terminator 3 got one thing right, although not the same Arnie-bot. Whilst?Terminator Salvation is seemingly no longer part of this story, Terminator 3 is. When given the chance to ‘Days of Future Past’ previous sequels, instead they thought it’d be best to honour this one. An odd decision to make considering you’ve erased all the sequels, including the good ones with the finale.
3- Kyle Reese had never seen a T-1000 before?
How? How has he not seen one? He is shoulder-deep in Robot excrement and has never seen a T-1000 before? Did John never tell him about them? I suppose it wasn’t relevant information for John Connor to pass on, since he knew Kyle Reese wouldn’t live to see the events of Terminator 2, but still, it must have come up at some point. Furthermore, when did the robots make T-1000s? The scenes in the future have the humans destroying “Skynet” and an?army of T-800s, so when did they send back a T-1000?
4 – T-1000 paradox?
So, Kyle has never heard of them and the “end” of Skynet happens before they were invented. Then who sent back the Byung?hun Lee T-1000? Okay, the natural thought process leads to the conclusion that Skynet wasn’t defeated, not in full. They continued on somehow. If this is true, then why would they still send back a T-1000 to kill John Connor/Kyle Reese? If they survive the “end” then why go further back? Focus on why the second time the actual “end” occurred.?I’m not sure if it’s time-travel that’s confusing or if this is a major plot hole.
5-John wasn’t really the bad guy after all?
They take the hero and make him the villain. Congrats. But was he? The taking over of John Connor was almost supernatural, not robotic, he was simply infected. Get rid of the infection and he’s a good guy again. On top of that, the main character of this franchise was made into a puppet for a character we see twice, Matt Smith’s Skynet.
6-There are specific bullets that can kill terminators and we only just learnt that?!?!?
They’re able to make terminator-killing bullets and we’ve only just learnt this 5 films in? Was this necessary?
7- Who sent back reprogrammed Arnie?
I get it. We will find out later. It’s a small reason to come back again. Like an abused?wife, we will all come back again.
8-Is there not acid in the future? Seems highly useful.
You can kill Terminators with acid? Perhaps in the early days of the war against machines acid wasn’t readily available. But humans manage to build quite the offensive, why did they not acquire acid and use it to demolish the machines in routine acid-carpet-bombing sessions?
9. They gonna smash?
If Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor get together again could we expect another saviour for humanity? It’s a new timeline now. In some weird convoluted way I bet Matt Smith is their child.
10. Is this a glimpse into our own future?
Rehashing old films by smashing together the good parts of a series.?Genisys at times feels like a check-list. You can see that the movie execs behind this simply wrote down what they thought made the other Terminator films good, and made sure to feature them all in this one. It does feel like we’re?the real fighters against the machines.
Kyle hadn’t seen a CSM T800 before (he even says so to Sarah in T1 after saving her) let alone a T1000, although he has seen other T800s. In T2 we learn that the T1000 is, according to the CSM T800 in that film, “an advanced prototype”. It was the only one, so that actually begs the question where did the second T1000 come from? Or the TX? Or the hybrid-Terminator in Terminator Salvation? Or Skynet-John in this film? Are they all really “advanced prototypes”? Why couldn’t this film have kept the machines – including “Pops” – more mechanical … John becoming mechanical could have been achieved without doing it literally. And besides you’re right, in T3 we learn that John gets assassinated by the CSM101 T800 (or T850) that gets sent back in that film.
I don’t think we’ll get an answer about the origins of the T1000 (Byung-hun Lee edition). The TX however, can sort of be explained. If we assume that after Skynet (Matt Smith) in the future takes control over John Connor that at some point they send him back.
Terminator Salvation, I believe, has been ignored for this sequel.
I think they missed the obvious ironic underline story going on, as John Connor fights for humanity he looses his own.
I’m just generally disappointed with the film and I wish a better director/production team was invested into this franchise.
